Past tense in the Ukrainian language is a very simple topic, you need just a bit of practice.
How to form the Past tense of Ukrainian verbs:
Step 1. Take an infinitive and drop ending -ТИ:
бути, жити, робити, працювати, малювати, грати, хотіти
Step 2. Form the past tense form using one of the suffixes and endings below, according to the gender and number of the subject that provides the action:
masc. -В* (був, жив, робив, працював, малював, грав, хотів)
fem. -ЛА* (була, жила, робила, працювала, малювала, грала, хотіла)
neut. - ЛО (було, жило, робило, працювало, малювало, грало, хотіло)
plur. -ЛИ (були, жили, робили, працювали, малювали, грали, хотіли)
* pronouns Я and ТИ could be expressed by both masculine or feminine forms of verb according to the context - is "я" or "ти" a man or a woman?
Examples in sentences:
Я був у Парижі навесні.
Вона жила в Японії 5 років.
Що ви вчора робили?
Чому вчора не працювало метро?
Тарас Шевченко малював чудові картини.
Українська пісня "Щедрик" грала в кіно "Сам удома".
Ми хотіли дещо (something) спитати.
There are some exceptions, that mostly will have irregular forms in masculine gender:
могти - міг - могла - могло - могли
допомогти - допоміг - допоиогла - допомогли
пекти - пік - пекла - пекло - пекли
нести - ніс - несла - несло - несли
везти - віз - везла - везло - везли
вести - вів - вела - вело - вели
and some others, less frequent.
